PUBLISHED ARTIST  > Nikky Corker

Nikky studied painting and three dimensional design at Cheltenham College of Art. After leaving college she went on to become Director of Art and Design at The Mill Hill School in North London.

Now having raised a family and left London, she is finding new opportunities to express her love of colour and movement. She works quickly with large quantities of paint encouraging the colours to mix on the canvas creating texture and fluidity.

Nikky says that much of her inspiration comes from the freedom she feels whenever she is close to the sea. I love the contrasts I find there, the open spaces of the beaches and the higgledy piggledy cottages around the harbours. The reflections in the calm waters and the invigorating salt spray of stormy winter waves. The reflections in harbour waters are the basis of my abstract work and the colours I choose are descriptions of the weather and atmosphere, the time of day and the seasons.

The bold painting technique I have developed is also employed in my still life pieces, simplifying the shapes and finding pattern in the reflected light in the backgrounds, leads much of my work to be impressionistic and bordering on the abstract.

Painting is an essential part of my life, each of my pieces is painted with an energy and joy that is spontaneous and truly me. Through my work I am delighted to be able to share the wonder and excitement that each day holds, be it exploring a different coastal village or watching the reflected sunlight on a familiar object. I shall never tire of looking and finding something new to celebrate.

Nikkys contemporary acrylic paintings are delighting a world wide audience. Her bold and energetic work has a broad appeal and can be found in both corporate and private collections. They are sought after in galleries throughout the country with their recognisable quirky boats and cottages and the trademark seagull which appears on each one. As well as being available as original paintings they are also published as limited editions and greetings cards.

The simplicity of her compositions is intended to make the work accessible to both children and adults alike. In a world of deadlines and complications Nikky says that she finds solace in the naive images which allow her to escape to the carefree days of childhood holidays and she hopes that her work conveys the joy that she feels as she paints.
